Tether Expands Real-Asset Strategy with $89 Million Investment in Gold Royalties Firm

Tether's acquisition of a 31.9% stake in Elemental Altus Royalties Corp., a publicly traded Canadian gold royalties company, for $89 million, represents a pivotal step in its "dual pillar strategy" of combining Bitcoin and gold assets.

On June 10, 2025, Tether Investments, an affiliate of the Tether Group, acquired 78,421,780 common shares of Elemental Altus, representing approximately 31.9% of the company’s issued and outstanding shares. The transaction was completed through a private offshore agreement with La Mancha Investments for CAD 121.6 million (approximately USD 89 million).

Additionally, Tether signed an option agreement with AlphaStream Limited, allowing it to purchase an additional 34,444,580 shares under certain terms and conditions. This option cannot be exercised before October 29, 2025, unless Elemental provides approval.

A Dual Pillar Strategy: Strengthening Bitcoin and Gold Holdings

Tether’s investment in Elemental Altus is part of its broader strategy to diversify its asset portfolio and create a more resilient financial infrastructure.

The company already holds over 100,000 BTC (worth approximately $10.44 billion) and close to 80 tons of physical gold, alongside its gold-backed token, Tether Gold (XAUT). Bitcoin is described by Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino as "the ultimate decentralized hedge against monetary inflation," while gold is regarded as "a time-tested store of value".

On June 8, Ardoino expressed optimism about Tether's future growth prospects and his excitement about the company’s next phase of growth.

By investing in Elemental Altus, Tether gains direct exposure to global gold production through the company’s royalty-based model, which avoids the operational risks associated with mining.

This strategic move reflects Tether’s commitment to blending traditional commodities with blockchain-based finance, as the company deepens its exposure to gold-backed financial infrastructure.

Building the Future of Digital Finance

The acquisition of Elemental Altus is not just an investment but a step toward building the financial infrastructure of the next century.

"Tether’s growing investments in gold and Bitcoin reflect our forward-looking strategy to build a more resilient and transparent financial system," Ardoino stated. He emphasized that this move strengthens the backing of Tether’s ecosystem while advancing Tether Gold and future commodity-backed digital assets.

The company’s dual pillar strategy highlights its vision of creating a decentralized financial ecosystem that leverages the stability of physical assets like gold and the innovation of blockchain technology.

As Tether continues to expand its footprint in the gold sector, its approach signals a growing interest in integrating traditional commodities into the crypto finance space.
