London Stock Exchange Group Launches Blockchain Platform for Private Fund Tokenization

By Sep 16, 2025

London Stock Exchange Group unveiled its Digital Markets Infrastructure platform on September 15, 2025, enabling private funds to issue and settle tokenized assets using blockchain technology.

London Stock Exchange Group launched its Digital Markets Infrastructure platform on September 15, becoming the first major global exchange to offer blockchain-based infrastructure for private funds. The platform facilitated its inaugural transaction with MembersCap, which used the system to raise capital for its tokenized fund MCM Fund 1.

The Digital Markets Infrastructure platform is built on Microsoft Azure, designed to enhance scalability and resilience while accelerating innovation in private markets. The system enables private funds to issue and settle tokenized assets, streamlining traditionally complex processes in the private capital sector.

LSEG, the London-based exchange operator that also owns Refinitiv data services, has been developing blockchain applications for trading infrastructure over the past year. Murray Roos, Head of Capital Markets at LSEG, previously indicated the company was exploring blockchain technology to create an end-to-end digital ecosystem, though he emphasized the focus was not on crypto assets but rather on enhancing traditional market infrastructure.

The platform represents LSEG's strategic move into tokenization of traditional financial instruments, targeting improved efficiency and accessibility in private markets. The company plans to expand the platform to additional asset classes beyond private funds, though specific timelines were not disclosed.

MembersCap, the asset management firm that completed the first transaction, utilized the platform to tokenize its fund structure, potentially reducing settlement times and operational complexities typically associated with private fund investments. The tokenization process allows for digital representation of fund shares on blockchain infrastructure while maintaining regulatory compliance.

The launch positions LSEG ahead of other major exchanges in blockchain adoption for institutional markets. Traditional exchanges have been cautious about blockchain integration, often limiting involvement to crypto trading rather than tokenizing conventional assets. LSEG's approach focuses on enhancing existing market structures rather than creating new crypto-native products.

The private markets sector has shown growing interest in tokenization as a means to improve liquidity and reduce friction in traditionally illiquid investments. Industry estimates suggest private markets could benefit significantly from blockchain infrastructure, particularly in areas of settlement efficiency and investor access.
