PayPal Launches Payment Links with BTC, ETH, and PYUSD Integration for P2P Transfers

PayPal Holdings Inc. launched PayPal links on September 15, enabling users to send and receive money through personalized, one-time links shared via text, email, or messaging apps. The San Jose-based digital payments company said US users can create these payment links immediately, with expansion to the UK, Italy, and other markets beginning later this month. Each link expires after 10 days and is designed for specific transactions to maintain security.

The announcement follows PayPal's introduction of PayPal World, a platform connecting global digital payment systems and wallets. Diego Scotti, General Manager of PayPal's Consumer Group, said the new features represent the next major step in the company's 25-year evolution of moving money between people. The company emphasized that friends-and-family transfers through PayPal and Venmo remain exempt from 1099-K tax reporting requirements.

PayPal plans to integrate Bitcoin, Ethereum, and PayPal USD stablecoin directly into its peer-to-peer payment flow, allowing US users to send these digital assets to PayPal, Venmo, and other digital wallets supporting crypto assets. The company reported that peer-to-peer and consumer payment volume grew 10% year-over-year in the second quarter, with Venmo achieving its highest transaction volume growth in three years.

The payment links feature aims to drive new customer acquisition and expand PayPal's ecosystem reach by making payments more accessible across communication platforms. PayPal, which serves approximately 200 markets globally, continues expanding its digital asset offerings after launching crypto trading in 2020 and introducing its PayPal USD stablecoin through partner Paxos Trust Company.
