Hong Kong Officials Withdraw from Bitcoin Asia to Avoid Contact with Eric Trump, SCMP Reports

Hong Kong regulator Eric Yip and lawmaker Johnny Ng withdrew from the upcoming Bitcoin Asia conference after being advised not to engage with keynote speaker Eric Trump, the South China Morning Post reported.

Eric Yip, executive director at Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission, and lawmaker Johnny Ng have withdrawn as speakers from the Bitcoin Asia conference scheduled for August 28–29.

The South China Morning Post, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that both officials pulled out after being advised not to interact with Eric Trump, son of U.S. President Donald Trump, who is listed as a keynote speaker. Trump, executive vice president of the Trump Organization, has been described by organizers as a vocal advocate of his father’s “Make America Great Again” movement and is also involved in U.S. cryptocurrency ventures.

Officially, Yip cited a business trip and Ng pointed to family reasons for their absence, though the move comes amid rising U.S.–China tensions over trade and technology. Their withdrawal highlights the diplomatic sensitivities complicating Hong Kong’s ambition to position itself as Asia’s crypto hub.

Clarence Shen, an SFC manager overseeing fintech policy, has since been added to the speaker lineup.
