OpenSea Expands Into Token Trading With Rally Acquisition

By JuneJul 09, 2025

OpenSea has acquired Rally to boost its mobile and token trading capabilities, advancing toward an all-in-one crypto experience.

On July 8, OpenSea announced its acquisition of Rally, the company behind Rally wallet app, as part of its strategy to deepen expertise in mobile and token trading.

Rally is more than just a wallet. Its mobile app enables users to follow friends and top traders in real time, making it easy to stay ahead of market moves. It also offers seamless token trading and social features, creating a dynamic, community-driven experience.

In September 2024, Rally introduced key innovations aimed at mainstream adoption, including gas-free transactions, a Venmo-style activity feed, and a meme-powered referral program. The app also supports Apple Pay for funding and Face ID for minting, with features designed to lower the barrier for new users on the Solana blockchain.

OpenSea’s Next Chapter

In the official announcement, Christ Maddern, who was previously the co-founder and CEO of Rally, was introduced as OpenSea’s new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) following the acquisition. He emphasized the platform’s broadened vision: "It’s not about 'tokens or NFTs', it’s about 'tokens AND NFTs'."

Since opening to the public in May 2025, OpenSea has expanded rapidly and now supports 17 blockchains. The acquisition of Rally reinforces its ambition to become a full-spectrum crypto platform, with a strong focus on mobile.

Maddern stated that OpenSea is entering a pivotal phase with a clear vision to become the all-in-one hub for Web3, empowering users to do more with their crypto than just hold it. As the industry moves from centralized exchanges to onchain platforms, OpenSea plans to lead this shift by integrating tokens and NFTs, focusing on mobile-first experiences, simplifying DeFi and perpetual trading, and using AI to improve safety and usability.

The goal is to grow the overall onchain user base rather than merely compete for existing market share, with major product developments planned in the coming year.

“The next generation of onchain consumers will be mobile-first,” Maddern said. “With the acquisition of Rally, along with OpenSea’s leading NFT position, we now have the tools to create the best combined mobile experience today, and an insanely ambitious vision for what we want to make possible tomorrow.”

He also hinted, "A completely new OpenSea Mobile experience will be coming in 2025."
