Europe’s Largest EUR Spot Exchange Bitvavo Secures MiCA License in the Netherlands

Bitvavo, commanding nearly 50% of the European EUR spot market, has secured a MiCA license from Dutch regulators, enabling expanded crypto services across the EU under the new regulatory framework.

Amsterdam-based cryptocurrency exchange Bitvavo has officially secured a Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) license from Dutch regulators, marking a significant milestone for the platform.

This approval positions Bitvavo among the first wave of European exchanges to comply with the European Union's newly established MiCA regulatory framework. Other exchanges that have also obtained MiCA licenses in the Netherlands include Coinbase and Gemini.

“This licence is an important milestone for Bitvavo and our users,” said Jeetan Patel, Chief Risk Officer at Bitvavo. “It enables us to offer our services across Europe under a single licence.”

Mark Nuvelstijn, CEO and co-founder of Bitvavo, added: “We fully support the core principles of MiCAR. This licence provides clarity, confidence, and enables Bitvavo to fulfil its ambition: to become the leading digital asset trading platform in Europe.”

Bitvavo, renowned as the largest EUR spot exchange, commands nearly 50% of the total EUR spot market volume, underscoring its dominance in this segment.

This substantial market share highlights its leadership in providing liquidity and trading opportunities for European investors. In comparison, Kraken ranks as the second-largest EUR spot exchange, with a considerably smaller market share.

The MiCA license allows Bitvavo to expand its services across the EU while ensuring compliance with the region's stringent regulatory standards. This development comes at a time when the European crypto market is undergoing rapid evolution, with MiCA regulations expected to bring greater clarity and investor protection to the industry.

  • On June 25, crypto exchange Kraken said it had received the MiCA license from the Central Bank of Ireland.

  • On June 21, crypto exchange Coinbase secured a MiCA license from the Luxembourg Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier.

  • Three weeks prior, on May 29, crypto exchange Bybit obtained a MiCA license from Austria’s Financial Market Authority (FMA).

  • Other exchanges like OKX, Crypto.com, and Bitpanda secured a MiCA license from Malta.
