Global Crypto Adoption Accelerates: 47 Nations Ease Regulations Since 2020

Regulatory landscape shifts dramatically as most countries embrace digital assets while few impose restrictions.

The global regulatory landscape for cryptocurrencies has undergone significant transformation since 2020, with the vast majority of countries moving toward greater acceptance and integration of digital assets into their financial systems.

According to data from RIVER, 47 countries have implemented measures to ease or simplify cryptocurrency regulations over the past four years, reflecting a growing recognition of blockchain technology's potential. In stark contrast, only 4 nations have moved in the opposite direction by tightening restrictions or implementing outright bans on cryptocurrency and mining activities.

The regulatory map shows clear regional patterns of adoption. Notably, 34 countries have approved Bitcoin ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds) or ETPs (Exchange-Traded Products).

Several countries have taken significant steps toward integration:

  • Russia legalized mining and Bitcoin's usage in international payments in 2024

  • Bolivia legalized Bitcoin in 2024

  • Turkey legalized Bitcoin payments in 2024

  • Nigeria legalized Bitcoin in 2023

  • Argentina legalized Bitcoin payments in 2023

  • Hong Kong allowed investors access to Bitcoin in 2023

  • The US allowed banks to custody Bitcoin in 2025 (as reported in the source material)

However, not all nations have embraced the technology:

  • Venezuela banned Bitcoin mining in 2024

  • China partially banned Bitcoin mining in 2021

This dramatic imbalance between countries liberalizing (47) versus restricting (4) cryptocurrency regulations signals a potential tipping point in global acceptance of digital assets as legitimate financial instruments.
