Shell Begins Accepting Bitcoin Payments at South African Gas Stations

Oil giant Shell has started accepting Bitcoin payments at select gas stations in South Africa, marking a significant crypto adoption milestone.

Shell, the multinational oil and gas company valued at approximately $200 billion, has begun accepting Bitcoin payments at gas stations across South Africa, according to a local video published by The Bitcoin Conference on Instagram. The London-headquartered energy giant becomes the first major oil company to implement Bitcoin payment systems in the African market.

The initiative allows South African customers to pay for fuel and other station purchases using Bitcoin, integrating digital currency payments into everyday transactions at Shell locations throughout the country. The move positions Shell as a pioneer among traditional energy companies embracing cryptocurrency payment methods.

Shell South Africa operates as a subsidiary of Shell plc, one of the world's largest oil companies with operations spanning exploration, production, refining, and retail across more than 70 countries. The company has maintained a significant presence in South Africa's energy sector for decades, operating hundreds of service stations nationwide.

The Bitcoin payment implementation comes as South Africa has emerged as one of Africa's most crypto-friendly markets. Recent data indicates South African residents have been spending substantial amounts on cryptocurrency for everyday purchases, with monthly crypto spending on groceries and retail items reaching significant levels since late 2024.
