Tether Bolsters Bitcoin Holdings in Q1, Accumulating an Additional 8,888 BTC

Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, has continued its strategic accumulation of Bitcoin. According to on-chain analyst @EmberCN, Tether withdrew 8,888 BTC (approximately $735 million) from Bitfinex using its reserve address at the end of Q1 2025. This purchase brings Tether's total Bitcoin holdings to 92,647 BTC, valued at approximately $7.64 billion at current market prices.

This move aligns with Tether's policy initiated in May 2023, where it committed to allocating 15% of its profits toward Bitcoin acquisitions. The company has consistently used this strategy to enhance its reserves, reflecting its confidence in Bitcoin as a long-term store of value.

Tether's ability to make such significant Bitcoin purchases stems from its robust profitability. In 2024, Tether reported a record-breaking net profit of $130 billion, driven by its extensive holdings of U.S. Treasury bills and the growing demand for USDT. The company also maintains a reserve buffer exceeding $7 billion, further solidifying its financial position. These profits have enabled Tether to allocate substantial resources to Bitcoin, diversifying its reserve assets.

As of today, Bitcoin is trading at approximately $83,000, with a market capitalization of about $1.65 trillion. Tether's consistent acquisitions have positioned it as the sixth-largest Bitcoin holder globally, with an average purchase cost of $41,147 per BTC. This strategic move has resulted in unrealized gains of approximately $3.83 billion, showcasing the effectiveness of its investment strategy.
